But Jesus immediately said to them:
"Take courage! It is I.
Don't be afraid."
"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied,
"tell me to come to you on the water."
"Come," he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat,
walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and,
beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.
"You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"
Matt 14:27-31
The hardest thing for a Christian to do is to put Jesus Christ ahead of the Bible. He can say that he is Christ centered but most often he is not. He knows the Bible and its contents more than what Christ teaches. His or her faulty equation of putting Christ in the same level of importance with the Bible is a major source of confusion and disillusionment.
It needs great courage to uphold Christ and His words over and above the Bible. Christ is the Word of God, the voice of His Father and the fulfillment of the prophecy. Technically, the Bible cannot be the Word of God. The Bible teaches good things but it has its limitation. A wrong interpretation of the Bible can lead a person to damnation, while following Christ is not subject to private interpretation. You just do what He says. Jesus can lead you all the way as you follow Him and His words.
It is taboo to question the Bible because to many it is an infallible divine message. Every single word is holy and any person must not add or subtract from the Book. The religious people search the Scripture to find life but rejected Christ as the Way, the Truth and the Life. Even nowadays there are many church goers who hijacked the Christ to worship the Bible.
A true follower of Christ will not be lost even if the Bible is not 100% true. Their faith is built upon the Words of Christ. Do we owe the teachings of Christ to the Bible? Not really. Instead, there will be no Bible if there was no Christ. Remove Christ from the Bible and all we can have are contradictory Jewish laws and religious practices. We love Jesus not because the Bible tells us so. We love Him because He tells us in so many ways.
Jesus Christ obeyed the commandments of His Father that were written in the Scripture. He clearly obeyed and fulfilled the wishes of His Father. Jesus had respected the Scripture. However, we should be careful to consider all the words in the Bible to be sacred. Take a good courage to break from old binding tradition. Our loyalty to the Bible ends when our loyalty to Christ begins. |
